Brochure on Gender-responsive Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration: Promoting the Women, Peace and Security Agenda
In the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000), the Department of Peace Operations has compiled a series of good practices, lessons learned as well as stories from the field on promoting gender-responsive DDR processes. The content of the brochure was developed based on extensive consultations with peace operations and HQ counterparts. In this sense, the document reflects field practices as well as the personal experiences of female combatants directly involved in DDR processes. Across DDR processes, women combatants usually represent a small percentage of demobilized caseloads. Despite this limitation, the implementation of DDR-related tools, notably Community Violence Reduction (CVR) projects, allows DDR components in peace operations to mobilize and empower women towards mitigating local conflict, preventing recruitment into armed groups and building community resilience, including its capacity to absorb ex-combatants.
