Former Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr. Hans Blix (Sweden, 1928 – ) started first as a member of Sweden's delegation to the United Nations General Assembly, serving from 1961 to 1981. During his tenure, he was Head of Department at Sweden's Foreign Ministry, rising in 1976 to the post of Under-Secretary of the State, in charge of international development cooperation. He was then appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs in October 1978. Dr. Blix served as Director General of IAEA from 1981 to 2000, where he dealt with the heated issue of the possibility of nuclear weapon development in Iraq.
